Godly Despair?

Speaker:
Passage: Job 3:1-20 & 4:1-17
Service Type:

Once Job had lost everything in life, possessions, children, and health, could it get any worse?  Adding now to grief, intense pain, and lonely stigma, Job curses the day of his birth; he wishes he had never been born.  Compared to his taking all his loses without wavering in his faith in the goodness of God, now we wonder if depression and despair over time will break his steady trust in God. Is it a sin to despair, to lose godward motivation, to hate your life?  When you are at your worst, when your prayers seem to go nowhere, or when you can’t even pray, does that prevent you from trusting God?  Can there be any such thing as godly despair?  We will consider what might be called godly despair.  Then we’ll examine Eliphaz’s recommended solution to despair and compare that with the Gospel answer.
