Though The Fig Tree Should Not Blossom
From the passage just read, you may wonder what set the prophet to shaking in his boots, and yet he followed with a wonderful statement of faith. Continuing our mini-series on Major News from the Minors, we look today at the prophecy of Habakkuk, a contemporary of Jeremiah, warning Judah of coming exile. What is particularly interesting about this prophecy is that it flows from the verbal interaction between the prophet and the Lord. And there’s a bit of a story here. First, Habakkuk takes a complaint to the Lord. He gets an answer from the Lord but doesn’t like it. Second, he comes back to the Lord raising his complaint even higher, to which the Lord makes a very sharp reply. Third, Habakkuk in faith comes to terms with God’s justice and holiness.
