Extravagant Love
The context of today's sermon takes place at the climax of Jesus' public ministry, as pilgrim crowds moved toward Jerusalem for Passover. The setting is charged as result of the raising of Lazarus, plans to kill him and Jesus, and an extravagant display by a grateful woman. Disturbing overtones:
- a) The hostess approaches a guest, in the role of a servant.
- b) Anointing the feet; normal to wash, but this better yet.
- c) Expensive perfume, eleven months’ wages—an extravagance!
- d) Wiping with hair, seems awfully personal, and the fragrance fills the place.
